Southern SAWG (Sustainable Agriculture Working Group) is pleased to announce that we will be offering a limited number of $500 travel scholarships along with free tuition for farmer-mentor teams to participate in the January 23–24, 2019 Growing Farm Profits Short Course in Little Rock, Arkansas. This short course will precede the SSAWG 2019 Annual Conference. Interested applicants must apply as two member teams, one member being a diversified horticulture or livestock farmer and the other from an organization seeking to provide support to the farmer member (extension, non-profit, loan officer, technical college, etc). Selected teams will agree to participate in the Growing Farm Profits training program that teaches practical methods for understanding and tracking profitability on the farm, and provides a variety of tools to manage the farm for profit. The course has a proven track record for improving farm profitability for participants and this year, for the first time, the needs of both horticulture and livestock producers will addressed.
This course will cover:
- Managing for profitability
- Evaluating market channels
- Investing in equipment
- Keeping records that matter
- Calculating profitability
- Controlling labor costs
- Using crop and livestock budgets
- Discovering true cost of production
- Pricing products
- Useful record keeping tools
In addition to participating in the course, selected teams will establish specific farm goals to work towards in the coming year using what was learned in the course and providing mutual support and accountability to each other through the year. Southern SAWG will also provide support from team trainers in what will become an engaging year-long learning community of both farmers and service providers focused on managing for profitability.
Are you a farmer looking for a little extra help to make the farm more profitable? Ask your favorite service provider to apply for this great opportunity for both of you to learn and work together. Are you a farm service provider who wants to be more supportive of farmers trying to make their farms more profitable? Ask your favorite farmer to apply with you for this excellent learning opportunity.
To apply, each team must submit a short application form that can be found here. Application forms must be completed and submitted to info@ssawg.org by no later than November 1, 2018. Selected teams will be notified by November 30, 2018.
Funding for this project provided in part by Southern SARE.
