During the SOWTH conference, TCLF facilitated the Texas session where we dug into what's needed to support farmers and sustainable local food production. Here are some of the key-takeaways:

TA Tips & Opportunities:

Effective TA:

It was great to hear how farmers feel effectively supported:

  • Cohort-based learning that fosters shared knowledge and problem-solving.
  • Clear, structured guidance with checklists and deadlines.
  • Financial literacy beyond funding ie. how to manage optimizing funds.
  • Multiple touchpoints and clear communication.
  • Providers that are adaptable and meet clients where they are.
  • Offline resources and in-person support.

Gaps in TA:

We appreciate your openness in sharing gaps in services, including:

  • Need for a step-by-step transition process for organic certification that honestly acknowledges the cost and complexity.
  • Limited organic meat processors in Texas, the challenges with organic grain vs. grass-fed operations, and the lack of local sustainable feed options.
  • Equipment acquisition / rental programs.
  • Farm-specific TA bookkeeping software and mileage/fuel tracking templates
  • Non-digital TA options (noted!)
  • 1:1 follow ups to complement webinars (noted!)
  • Assistance with Human Resources, such as hiring, conflict resolution, farmworker support (including those without legal status), H2A visa processes, when and how to hire staff, and budgeting for hiring.

TCLF is committed to strengthening our technical assistance services and the farmer networks to support one another with urgent applications and advocacy.
