Sheri L. Smith, Ph.D., AICP is a member of Texas Local Food because of her involvement in equitable access to produce in urban areas. Sheri is an associate professor at Texas Southern University in the area of Urban Planning and Environmental Policy where she teaches courses in sustainability and urban infrastructure. In addition to teaching, Sheri co-manages a 2 acre garden at TSU. The garden’s mission is to provide access of fresh fruits and vegetables to the community. She and others work within Houston’s Third Ward and the larger Precinct One on the inclusion of community gardens into the larger Houston’s food network. Her current research project is on the implementation of an Urban Agriculture District in the city.
